Surf's Up!

The morning began with Camembert, apple, and walnut crepes and a nap on the beach. The lull of the waves lured me to dream in my bed of sand. Kyle sat by my side, calling surfing instructors, itching for the chance to learn to surf the waves of Hawaii. After an hour or so, he hit the jackpot and we drove through the curling mountain tops to Kuapa Beach, stopping ever so often to snap a photo of tropical paradise.

As we waited for our private surfing lessons, we walked along the bay, stopping to try Azuki ice cream at a honest-to-goodness ice cream parlor. As the lesson loomed near, we enjoyed the marina view and a tad bit of liquid courage (basil margaritas).

With jubilant spirits, we boarded the boat; there stood a man with golden brown skin, his long hair kissed by the sun, and board shorts that fell just below the line of decency. This man, a true native of Hawaii, was to be our surfing instructor.

We got the low-down on surfing basics and practiced positioning on the boards as we rode to the coral reefs where we’d be surfing. Anchored, we strapped on our boards and jumped into the water, which was refreshing to say the least! I’m proud to say both Kyle and I stood up on our boards on our first wave! While I managed to ride the waves and stay on my board, Kyle proceeded to ride the waves in style, quickly learning how to cut his board across the wave, and looking like a pro!

We couldn’t have had more fun! The waves arrived consistently, giving us a true workout as we paddled to meet each one. Paddling is definitely the hardest part about surfing for beginners - leaving them sore for days after a two-hour lesson. I’ve got to admit - we are hooked! Maybe I can practice useful decorating and incorporate a surf board into our decorating scheme?
