Ever so often, as I wove through the sea of white tents that is the Magic City Art Show, a tantalizing view of Park Place’s array of carnival food caught my eye. After hours of enjoying the glowing and breezy day browsing, we trekked across Lynn Park. As we stepped onto the gleaming blacktop, we were bombarded with a variety of choices: Frito pies, corn dogs, barbeque, gyros, seafood tacos, funnel cakes – Templeton’s paradise – “A fair is a veritable smorgasbord orgasbord orgasbord…”
Deciding on gyros and a funnel cake, we headed towards A Taste of Greece. The vendor had a selection of tossed lettuces with olives, onions, and tomatoes; lamb; and long, thick, polish sausage links. The scent of the sausage was reminiscent of languid mornings being awakened by the zesty aroma of breakfast sausage sizzling on the cast iron skillet and drifting up the stairwell into my bedroom. Seeing the object of my desire, the vendor offered to throw in a sausage link.
Unfortunately, the gyros were not up to par. The lamb was rubbery, its metallic taste covered only by immense amount of garlic that left our breath pungent for two days. The sausage was perfection - A juicy bite of smoky heaven.
Our crispy sweet funnel cake sprinkled with confectioner’s sugar was a delight! The sugar melted on our tongues as we bit through the crunchy fried layer and into its soft center. The smiling vendors even delivered our funnel cake to us as we waited in line for our gyros. The Asphalt CafĂ©? Definitely not your five-star restaurant but a delightful ending to a fun spring day enjoying local artistic talents!
